Finland, Sweden
A descendant of Old Norse, the language spoken by the Germanic peoples of Scandinavia during the Viking Age (the late 8th century through the 11th century AD), Swedish is the largest North Germanic language. This linguistic subgroup or family also includes Faroese, Danish, Icelandic, and Norwegian.
Most of the 10 million native Swedish speakers live in Sweden. The language is one of the two official languages of Finland, where 5.5% of the population is native Swedish speaking. Around half of the Finnish population claims to be fluent enough in the language for conversation.
As a member of the North Germanic (Scandinavian) language family, Swedish is related to other north European languages such as Dutch, English, and German, whose structure and vocabulary are similar. Swedish also is mutually intelligible with its closest linguistic neighbours, Danish and Norwegian.
Spectrum Translation has translated and localized Swedish for both Sweden and Finland since 2005, working in areas such as agriculture, business, education, medicine, publishing, and science.
