Spanish is a truly global language. The official language of 20 countries, it is one of the world’s most geographically widespread media of communication.
It is also a major minority language of the United States, with some 15% of the country speaking Spanish at home. With over 50 million speakers, the US is the second largest Spanish-speaking country after Mexico.
Some 470 million people are native users of the language, and another 100 million use it as a second language for communication.
From its origins as a Latin vernacular in the Iberian Peninsula, Spanish has gone on to encounter new peoples, languages, and civilizations, often with ancient roots, evolving and absorbing many types of influence along the way.
Around 75% of modern Spanish is still derived from Latin. Eight percent of vocabulary is of Arabic origin, and other languages such as French and Italian and, in the Americas, Nahuatl, Quechua, and Guaraní have all impacted its lexicon.
It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and plays an important part in international commerce, culture, economics, and politics.
