One hundred and fifty million people have Russian as their native language, and another 110 million use it for communication. One of the world’s most widespread languages, it is spoken from Kaliningrad in Eastern Europe to Vladivostok on the Pacific.
It also serves as a lingua franca for the former republics of the Soviet Union, thus linking modern nations such as Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with countries of the Caucusus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), as well as many Central Asian nations (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.).
Seventh among languages in terms of number of speakers, Russian is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations, sharing equal status with Arabic, Chinese, English, French, and Spanish.
Its unique alphabet, Cyrillic, makes it instantly recognizable and distinguishes it from the majority of other European languages, some of which (e.g., Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian), also use Cyrillic or a combination of Cyrillic and Latin scripts. The script has also been applied to many Central Asian languages and gone as far east as Mongolia, whose national language is now also written in a form of adapted Cyrillic.
